In addition to Ray Bishop’s Rolfing practice at
the Center he also offers two approaches to craniosacral
therapy that may be done as a part of a Rolfing series
or as discrete sessions. The purpose of craniosacral
therapy is to locate and treat strain patterns in the
sutures or meeting points of the bones in the skull
as well as disturbances of the flow of fluid through
the spinal cord. This fluid called Cerebrospinous Fluid
(or CSF, for short) lubricates and buffers the brain
and is a cleansing system for the tissues and cells
of the central nervous system. It is a fluid that is
extracted from the blood and circulated throughout and
between layers of membranous tissue that act as both
stabilizers and support systems for large regions of
the brain and spinal cord. When restrictions (or lesions)
occur or are created due to impact trauma, infections,
congenital deformities or birth related trauma, they
impact the normal movement of this detoxifying and protective
fluid system and can adversely affect health. Proper
treatment particularly in the young can positively influence
development, improve motor, cognitive and nervous function
and more immediately reduce stress and improve the functioning
of the entire organism. Its value for treating and resolving
strain patterns and disturbances to the nervous system
in adults is also well documented and described in the
literature (see the writings of John Upledger, D.O.)
The
CSF has an inherent rhythm, the Craniosacral Rhythm
(CSR), a frequency if you will, that when disturbed
creates disorder and adaptive strains or lesions in
the system. Being able to feel, direct and normalize
this rhythm and to help create or recreate its unimpeded
flow throughout the enclosed fluid system of the Central
nervous system (which includes the brain, spine and
related intrinsic nerves) is the goal and purpose of
this subtle yet profound work.
In
addition to the CSR, there are slower and less obvious
fluid energetic flows that are called the fluid tides
or simply the tides. These tides (the Mid and Long Tides
being most practitioners primary focus) can be felt
and evoked throughout the body and are part of a more
subtle healing and regulating system whose existence
and nature have been recently described in the writings
of Eric Franklyn. The process of interphasing with these
subtle movements is somewhat different from traditional
craniosacral therapy in that we are not actively palpating
and feeling for lesions. Rather, our goal here is to
wait passively until the fluid tide comes to our hands
and generously interacts with us. This quiet non-invasive
approach allows the body to achieve a greater sense
of ease and balance; it evokes a natural inherent healing
mechanism which is called The Breath of Life. Again
the nature and character of these tides have been described
in osteopathic writings for over a hundred years in
the works of major teachers and practitioner such as
Sutherland and more recently Fulford and Becker.
Just
as there are vibrational sonic frequencies whose evocation
and audition have a profound salutary effect on brain
function, there exist non-sonic internal and external
vibrational frequencies whose connections to sound are
more metaphorical than literal. A proper alignment with
and experience of these rhythmic pulsations helps ease
and balance the system, reduces stress and toxic mechanisms
that sabotage our daily functioning by diverting us
from the eternal present and may help lead us closer
to an experience of deep peace, integration and order
that we all crave and desire.
Craniosacral
Biodynamics is a powerful non-invasive tool now more
widely practiced in the United States whose growing
popularity among sensitive practitioners and their clients
serve as a testament to its efficacy and healing potential.
Recently, we at the Center brought in an outside practitioner
to provide this work to our clients. Now we have a practitioner
in-house proficient in this powerful and increasingly
popular work.
